Diatom preparations for water analysis

All surface waters are to be investigated to meet the requirements of the Water Framework Directive. The aim is for the quality of all bodies of water to be good or very good by 2015. The water samples taken are subject to physical, morphological, chemical and biological tests to determine their initial status. If it is necessary to implement measures to improve the quality of the water then their effectiveness is established through corresponding analyses.

Lab centrifuges are used for biological testing of water – for instance to establish the concentration of diatoms. These single-cell algae are bioindicators and are therefore suitable for assessing the status of water.
